Mary Teresa Pengeroth was born on April 14, 1925, to Irish immigrant parents Nora and William Tangney. Growing up in Mission Hill, Boston, with her brother and sister, Mary was a child of the depression. When Mary was young, the family moved to Ireland to take care of her aunt’s family. Although a difficult time, Mary’s time in Ireland fortified her love and pride for her heritage. A little more than a year later, Mary and her family returned to Mission Hill and the continued hardships of the Great Depression.

Mary graduated from Mission Church High School in 1943 where she was a member of the Latin Club, Dramatic Club, and Glee Club. In 1945 Mary joined the Marines and was stationed at the Marine Corps Air Station at Miramar, California. Shortly after Mary returned home to Boston, her father died and Mary worked to support her mother and siblings. Because of Mary’s support, her brother and sister were able to pursue college educations, a dream that wouldn’t be realized for Mary until she was nearly eighty years old.

Mary married Patrick Pengeroth in 1954 and they raised their four children in Jamaica Plain and later in Arlington. Mary worked at the Roxbury Highland Cooperative Bank in Jamaica Plain from the 1960s to the early 1990s making her way through the ranks and ultimately to the position of Bank Treasurer by the time she retired.

Upon retirement, Mary decided it was time to pursue her college education. By the time Mary was in her late 70s she earned a bachelor’s degree in History, Magna Cum Laude.
Mary loved to travel at home and abroad. She loved to garden and to spend time with her children and grandchildren. She was an avid Red Sox fan, including holding season tickets during the Ted Williams years.
Mary experienced a lot of change over her lifetime. The country struggled through the great depression, numerous wars, the world became automated, we went to the moon and beyond, and not least of all the Red Sox finally won not one but four World Series! What never changed though was Mary’s unwavering devotion to her faith, her deep love for her family, her smile, her wit, and the twinkle in her Irish eyes…

Condolences to Mary's Family!
I worked with Mary for many years at the Roxbury-Highland Cooperative Bank in Jamaica Plain from 1967 to 1980. Mary was a great co-worker and friend. I remember fondly her love for her husband Pat and her children. May God grant you peace in His Heavenly Kingdom. Again, condolences to the Pengeroth family on your loss!
